Afternoon is a 6-page accordion book by Shefalee Jain published in print (Nov. 2019) as well as online by BlueJackal (May 2020). This little book is a wordless exploration through visuals, of a child in a garden in mid-afternoon; afternoon being that stark enigmatic time of the day which is without shadows and yet is punctuated by ‘tonalities’. For Shefalee, her book resonates with a wonderful poem by the well known poet Manglesh Dabral titled 'दिन'(Day). Here is a small excerpt from the same poem:

दिन

​

'वह एक सुंदर दिन था,

दूर तक एक हरापन, पीलापन, दूर तक लाल  

एक नीलापन, डगमगाता चलता हुआ जगह-जगह 

एक सरल दिन 

जब धूप में रहस्य जैसा कुछ चमकता था 

कुछ कांपता था हवा की गति के साथ-साथ 

देह के जोड़ों और उँगलियों के पोरों में सरसराता वह दिन 

जब कहीं दूर तक जाना संभव था 

किसी असंभव को खोजने 

और समझ में न आने वाली चीज़ों को समझने के लिए... '
